Sinulog Festival Experience Year 2

sinulog festival3

Pit Senyor! I dunno what it exactly means and the history behind it. Of course, because I’m not a native Cebuano (this is the only excuse that I know). But I know it’s something that is said to honor Sto. Nino., which is the reason why Sinulog Festival is celebrated every year here in Cebu. I bet you already heard that because it’s the chant that we ususally hear during the Sinulog Festival.

Days before the festival, you would hear ethnic music with that certain chant almost everywhere in Cebu – in food chains, malls, department stores, restaurants, etc. That’s how they set the festive mood here. It’s like the LSS during the Sinulog season. And I love it!hehe.

Sinulog Festival is something that I don’t wanna miss here in Cebu despite of all the not-so-nice things that one must go through. Looking back on what I experienced last year, I knew it’s gonna be exhausting as usual.

Here are the 10 things that discourage me to watch:

1) I would have to walk few miles.

2) I would have to prepare myself for a possible stampede.

3) I would have to bring lots of hankies and buy bottles of mineral water.

4) I would have to prepare myself to sniff smelly armpits.

5) I would have to brace myself for the possibility of being sick the next day.

6) I would have to be patient whenever someone steps on my feet.

7) I would have to join the long queue in the food chains and have my lunch a bit late.

8) I would have to run for cover when the scorching sun is burning me to a crisp and would make me have have that “Neyo-and-Usher-like” skin.

9) I would have to realize that I’m only 5 feet-something and feel self-pity when a giant stands in front of me.

10) I would have to pretend there’s no malice when a girl rubs her b**bs on my back. lols.

But like what I did last year, I spent the entire day in the streets and joined the eager spectators who flocked to the sidewalks to watch the Mardi Gras and street-dancing. With my friends Raf and Candice, I wandered along the streets as early as 9 AM.  I was already sweating profusely when we finally found a place where we could have a good view of the contingents. And yeah, the parade started and we saw ’em all strutt their stuff. lols.

I just wanna share these pics to those who missed the festival. Forgive my highlow-end digicam for producing clearblurry pics (or was it me who failed to adjust the settings). And forgive my poor framings and compositions. I’m no pro photographer. lols.

At the end of the day, I was dead tired again. I didn’t even want to watch the fireworks display and laid flat as soon as I got home. The idea of having dinner on time didn’t interest me at all and I zonked out right after I took off my shirt and pants. Nuff said. I’m not complaining here. Watching Sinulog Festival would always be a great experience. And when the time comes that I would have to leave Cebu, I’ll keep coming back for Sinulog and say “Pit Senyor!”. woot!

pit senyor means this is our petition Lord.

@dong ho: yeah. nakaka-impress nga kasi organized nga yung Sinulog. this is one of the philippines’ grandest festivals. sana makapanood ka ulit ng Sinulog kuya dong. if ever umalis nga ako dito, isa to sa mga mami-miss ko. thanks for the info…

cool. haha! ako naman, i was dead tired the whole day. so, i was only able to go out at night. kaya i only saw the fireworks display and not the entire Sinulog event. hehe.

    😀

  7. coolwaterworks Says:

Good for you that you were able to roam and take pictures during Sinulog…

I am living in Mactan for 6 years now, but I was not able to witness Sinulog on the streets. I don’t mind the long walks… I just find it hard for me to mix in such a large crowd… Even in Masskara, I was only able to witness it once on the streets – when we were made crowd marshalls (PMT). Watching them on TV is just fine for me… 🙂

Oh, and for PIT SENYOR – it’s actually a shortening of the phrase “sampit sa Senyor”….

  8. ced Says:

  15. leylander Says:

    beero,

pit senyor is a shortened version of ‘sangpit sa senyor’ or literally, ‘call/petition to the holy child’. when you have a petition, you can say ‘pit senyor! dugay na ko gusto makaanak pero wala pa gyud. bulugi mi ug angel!’

if you’re praying for someone, you say, ‘pit senyor! kang beero kini! (this one is for beero) dugangi siya ug five inches para makaabot siya ug six feet’.

    ahihihi.

too bad i didn’t see you sa sinulog. masyadong maraming tao this year. hehehe.

anyways, lex, allow me to post this link. these are line’s photos of the event. nindot kaayo iyang pics. 😀

  16. beero Says:

@coolwaterworks: magkaiba tayo kuya mark. ako kasi maghapon sa labas pag Sinulog. you must try to watch the parade one time. masaya naman eh. kaya nga lang dapat mo talagang paghandaan yung 10 things na sinabi ko. hehe.

@jorge: tenks parekoy! 😆 sana mapanood mo rin to ng live (with no commercial break) ahehe. kaya nga eh, it’s worth it naman. haha. kaya nga siguro uminit. pero pagkatapos inulan naman. hehe.

@broutoy: hehe. sana nga makapunta ka next year kuya utoy para makita mo in person yung magagandang cebuana. lols

  19. rovielran Says:

    wow saya naman 😀

  20. Basti Says:

I love watching Sinulog, but I wasn’t able to watch it thins year. I hope I won’t miss next year.
Honestly, some of the reasons that you stated on what discourage you to watch it, are the reason why I want to watch it. Like having to walk a lot, and having to buy water a lot, coz it makes me feel healthy, and I consider it getting a good exercise while having fun, and not really noticing how far you’ve gone walking.
Staying under the scorching sun isn’t fun and the rest of your reasons are true. With everyone sweating up, you can’t help but smell them. But people who experience Sinulog can’t help but want to experience it over and over again. LOL, I’m one of them.

  21. Thank you for the infos. This would be very helpful for those who are planning to travel especially in Cebu.
